Glossary

amphibian - a vertebrate that spends some time on land but must breed and develop into an adult in water. Frogs, salamanders and toads are amphibians.


invertebrate - an animal, such as an insect or worm, that does not have a backbone


larva - the immature form of some insects and amphibians that go through metamorphosis to become adults (The plural of larva is larvae. Larval is the adjective.)


macro-invertebrate - an invertebrate that is large enough to be seen with the naked eye


metamorphosis - the dramatic process of change in form, during development from immature to adult, that takes place in amphibians and insects


organisms - living things, including plants, animals, fungi and protista


predator - an animal that hunts and eats other animals


vernal - spring


vertebrate - an animal with a segmented spine and a well-developed brain, such as a mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish
